 India's oldest medical system, Ayurveda has been flourishing for the last 5000 years, while witnessing many waves of evolution. After decades of neglect, the ancient Indian healing and cure system is poised to take its place in the healthcare mainstream. Ayurveda is now on a fast track of progress and transformation into a modern vibrant health and medical system. While preserving its core strengths , it is using modern science to unravel clinical evidence. Along with its powerful individual holistic approach, the system is advocating several general means, including Yoga, to improve people's health. 

Ayurveda is set to grow into one of the most innovative growth markets in the global healthcare domain domain. The size of the global Ayurveda market is expected to reach US $ 9.7 billion by 2022. While in India the industry is predicted to rise three-fold from US $ 2.5 billion in 2015 to US $ 8 billion by 2022. 

Meaning and Definition of Ayurveda

Ayurveda is the system of medicine that evolved in India with a rational and logical foundation and it has survived as a distinct entity from remote antiquity to the present day. The fundamentals on which the Ayurvedic system is based are essentially true for all times and do not change from age to age. 
  •  Ayurveda is considered by many scholars to be the oldest healing science. In Sanskrit, Ayurveda means "The Science of Life."
  • The word Ayurveda derived from AYU and VEDA. AYU means life, VEDA means science or knowledge.
  • Ayurvedic knowledge originated in India more than than 5,000 years ago and is often called the "Mother of All Healing."
  • It stems from the ancient Vedic culture and was taught for many thousands of years in an oral tradition from accomplished masters to their disciples.
  • Some of this knowledge was set to print a few thousand of years ago, but much of it is inaccessible.
  • The principles of many of the natural healing systems now familiar in the West have their roots in Ayurveda, including Homeopathy and Polarity Therapy.
  • Ayurveda deals with advantage and disadvantage as well as happy and unhappy states of life along with what is good and what is bad for life ,its measurement and the life itself. It embraces all living things, animate and inanimate.
  • It is divided into three main branches viz., NARA Ayurveda dealing with human life, SATVA Ayurveda the science dealing with animal life and its diseases, VRIKSHA Ayurveda, the science dealing with plant life, its growth and diseases.
  • It is amply clear that Ayurveda is not only a system of medicine but also a way of life for complete positive health and spiritual attainments.
  • Ayurveda believes that positive health is the basis of for attaining four cherished goals of life viz., Dharma(path of rightness), Artha(finance) , Kama(Desire), Moksha(Salvation).
  • All these four goals cannot be achieved without sound positive health. Positive health is defined as : 
      1. Well balanced Metabolism
      2. Happy state of the soul, senses and the mind 
  • Senses here mean the five organs of perception viz., smell, taste, sight, touch, and hearing coupled with the organs of action-viz. ,mouth, hands, foot, and organs of excretion and reproduction.
